About Our Camps

Life Lab Science Program

and the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems

are pleased to offer day camp programs

for children ages 7 - 14.

Our camps take place at our Garden Classroom site on the UCSC Farm.


Spring Break Day Camp for 7-11 year olds

  • April 5 - 9 , 2010, 9:00-1:00

Children ages 7 - 11 are invited to join us on the farm for spring gardening, cooking, and crafts.  We'll be preparing food fresh from the farm.  Gardening activities will include seed sowing for home gardens, composting, and harvesting.  Garden-based crafts and games will round out this exciting new week of camp.

Plants Day
Scavenger hunt in the garden • Discover the world of roots and shoots • Harvest, prepare, and enjoy “stone soup”
 
Birds, Bees & Butterflies Day
Build a group flower • Match pollinators with their flowers • Make and eat a honey treat • Make a beeswax candle

 


Hike Day

Make a popcorn snack for the trail • Explore garden habitats and surrounding wildlands on a hike

Farm Day

Help care for our friendly chickens • Find out how snakes, bugs, & fire help on the Farm!
 
Habitat Day
Web of Life • Discover bird life in the garden • Plant seeds to make more habitat • Make a garden treat!

Wildlands & Watering Cans Summer Day Camp for ages 7 - 10

Join us on the farm for gardening, cooking fresh food from the farm, hiking, crafts, music, and art. Each day has a theme (past examples: Bug Day, Garden Pizza Day, Chickens & Eggs Day) and each day begins with farm chores (Chickens, Fresh Fruit Popsicle-making, Farm Update, and Weather Report) and ends with storytelling under the walnut tree. Friday afternoons parents join us for a kid- harvested Farmer's Market and or Farm Treats Tasting Party. Each session serves 28 campers with a 1:7 ratio of instructors to campers.

  • Session I - June 21-25 & June 28-July 2, 2010, 9:00-3:00
  • Session II - July 12-16 & 19-23, 2010, 9:00-3:00
  • Session III - July 26-30 & August 2-6, 2010, 9:00-3:00

New! Garden Sprouts Summer Day Camp for 4-6 year olds

  • Session I - July 12, 14, 19 & 21, 2010 (Mondays and Wednesdays 9:15-12:15)
  • Session II - July 26, 28, August 2 & 4, 2010 (Mondays and Wednesdays 9:15-12:15)

Inspired by our popular Seeds of Wonder preschool & Kindergarten field trip program, this new camp will serve 8 campers with a 1:4 ratio of instructors to campers.  We will discover the garden and farm with our senses and make connections through children's literature, storytelling, singing, garden crafts, imaginative play, harvesting, and food preparation.  Daily themes will be Bugs, Seeds, Chickens & Eggs, and Garden Party.

Cost: $160.00 per two-week session (no single week registration available)

Farm and Wilderness Exploration for 11-14 year olds

  • August 9-13, 2010, 9:00-3:00

Join us this year for a brand-new Farm & Wilderness camp, put on in partnership with Tod Haddow of Standing Tree Nature School.


* Harvest, cook and enjoy produce from the farm and garden
* Practice wildlife tracking and wilderness survival skills
* Explore local open space reserves

This session will serve 14 campers with a 1:7 ratio of instructors to campers to allow for hands-on exploration.

Cost: $270.00 per session; sibling discount 10% off second child.

Summer Camp Youth Volunteers

Past Life Lab campers ages 15-18 are invited to join in camp leadership as summer camp youth volunteers.  Work with our counselors to make camp happen! Assist with teaching camp activities, leading hikes, and behind-the-scenes tasks such as setting up stations and stocking materials.  Gain valuable experience in environmental education!

Youth volunteers accepted for whole camp sessions only (any session of Wildlands & Watering Cans); one volunteer accepted per session.  Youth volunteers will arrive with counselors at 8:15 and depart each day at 4:00.
