Butternut Squash Wins Every Time!

Second graders on field trips to the Blooming Classroom in Watsonville are learning about the structure and function of the 6 parts of a plant: the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.

And what better way to learn about these plant parts than by eating them?

Children immerse themselves in plant anatomy by tasting and comparing leafy greens, carrots, corn, and different types of apples. They soak and dissect seeds, plant corn, and make popcorn. Then, it’s on to tasting three kinds of roasted squash: pumpkin, butternut and kabocha squash. Before the tasting, the students guess that pumpkin will be their favorite, but butternut squash always wins!

Life Lab is offering over 100 field trips this year to students in Watsonville and the Pajaro Valley.
