Rock Painting

Find some rocks and paint beautiful designs, creatures and other nature-inspired themes on your rocks. Ages 2+, 30 min

Add a pop of color to your garden or window sill or create a pet you don’t need to take care of! All you need for this activity is any kind of paint (acrylic works best if you have it), a paintbrush, a rock, and some imagination. First, we need to collect some rocks. Head on outside to a park, a river bed, beach or somewhere with some rocks and search for larger rocks, about the size of your fist. Flatter and smoother rocks are easier to paint on but more rugged rocks allow for more creativity in designing. Once you have your rock, start imagining what it could be turned into. Does it look like an animal? Does it remind you of something you’ve seen today? Does it have any characteristics that will be hard to hide? Once you’ve decided what you want to paint, you can wash off the rock with a wet napkin to get any dirt off or just start painting! It might take a few coats of paint to cover the rock fully. Once you’ve painted your rock, let it dry somewhere sunny and give it a new home. This activity is great for small or large groups and with any age range. You’ll have a range of rock masterpieces for your house or garden! This activity can be done indoor or outdoors.
